I joined DHAC in September 2015 after meeting some Harriers at the South Park Park Run and being helped to get a couple of PBs by them. I’d always though that an ‘athletics club’ would be elitist - all about fast times and winning - but meeting these guys showed me that the club was about much, much more than that.
I’d always enjoyed running and was a contented hobby jogger but joining the club has helped me move on in so many ways.
I’ll never forget the first track session I went to. I was really nervous, and yes I am in my 40s!, but the other people there were very welcoming and encouraging and by the time I finished my first 400m lap I was grinning like a child. Look at me, running on a proper track like a proper athlete! 2 years on and I’m still like that on a regular basis.
My main running interests are trail and fell running and long distance road runs, and I’m currently training for my first proper ultramarathon later in 2017. But I find that the shorter track interval sessions and road sessions that the club organises are a great supplement to my longer workouts. The social side of the club is brilliant too.
I joined the club committee as a way of putting something back into the club that has helped me so much in the last couple of years. I will almost certainly never win a race for the club, but I can contribute in other ways!
Always happy to talk to people about the club and how it can improve, or to swop book reviews as I’m a bit of a running book worm. Feel free to drop me a line any time. email@example.com
